OnePlus battery drain may be due to latest WhatsApp update: Heres how to fix it

OnePlus, and some Xiaomi phone users, have been complaining of notable battery drain on their handsets due to WhatsApp. Some OnePlus smartphone users took to Reddit to complain about high battery drain, while others did the same on OnePlus Forums or on Twitter. Everywhere, the complaints mention that their handset’s battery is being depleted quite fast and as per their device’s battery consumption details, WhatsApp seems to be the culprit. Version 2.19.308 of the popular chat app is said to be dramatically consuming battery on handsets as some users reported that the app used about 68 percent of their battery since they fully charged their device. WhatsApp has not officially acknowledged if the new update of the messaging app is the cause of the battery drain problem. However, if you are facing a similar issue, here are some simple steps you can take to resolve it. While updating WhatsApp from the Play Store you should update the app to a version higher than 2.19.308, which shoul...

Facebook must remove fake Bitcoin ads featuring Big Brother creator or pay $1.2M

The billionaire creator of Big Brother, John de Mol, has successfully sued Facebook. A Dutch court has ordered the social media giant to remove advertisements that feature his likeness to promote fraudulent Bitcoin investments, Reuters reports. Facebook must take down the fraudulent ads or reportedly face fines of up to €1.1 million ($1.2 million). The social media giant reportedly argued that it’s simply a “neutral funnel for information” and cannot be obligated to act. Reuters noted the court said this was “not acceptable.” “The company plays too active a role with respect to advertisements, which form its primary business model to argue… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Bitcoin,Facebook...

Call of Duty: Mobile may be getting a Zombie mode very soon

Since it’s been released, Call of Duty: Mobile has been one of the best mobile experiences around. The fast-paced gameplay and range of weaponry has made it the go-to game for a lot of gamers. That being said, don’t you guys think that the game could use a new undead mode? Well, look no further, as the developers of Call of Duty: Mobile has said that, “the undead are coming”. It looks like the developers will be adding this mode to the game soon enough. It may even be rolled out along with the next big update. In a Reddit post on the CoD: Mobile subreddit, the official account posted a large update where they talked about Zombie mode. To be fair, the mode has been a part of the game since the beta build but the option has been greyed out and cannot be selected. There have been no real release dates announced but they did drop a couple of hints as to when it may drop. The dev team has said that the mode will be available, “before you know it”. Which leads us to believe that ...

Telegram, Signal are vulnerable to hackers as well

WhatsApp-NSO group spyware recently affected an estimated total of 1,400 users globally, including many users in India. While some users may have drifted towards other chat applications for security reasons, a recent report claims that chat apps like Telegram and Signal aren’t safe either. While leading chat apps offer a certain amount of encryption, it must be noted that this encryption has its flaws as well. Once hackers get to know any vulnerability or bug in the app security ecosystem, a user’s personal data is at their mercy. Unlike WhatsApp and Apple iMessage, Telegram doesn’t offer end-to-end encrypted chats. However, it offers the added layer of security through a manually activated 'Secret chat' option.A recent research paper from MIT highlights several flaws in Telegram’s security features noting that it employs its own messaging protocol, called "MTProto", which lacks scrutiny from outside cryptographers. Further, the paper has claimed that Telegram follows the old ...

Apple’s AR headset will reportedly arrive in 2022, its glasses in 2023

We’ve been hearing rumors Apple is working on some sort of augmented reality headset for ages, but today a report from The Information provides the strongest evidence yet that Apple is getting ready to enter the AR fray. Specifically, Apple is aiming to release its AR headset in 2022, and a pair of smart glasses will follow in 2023. The Information says its report was sourced from an October presentation among Apple employees.  Though some earlier reports had pegged the headset’s release date for 2020, it appears Apple is biding its time to get the technology right rather than rushing… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Apple...

Human language stops us from understanding how animals think

Sarah, “the world’s smartest chimp,” died in July 2019, just before her 60th birthday. For the majority of her life, she served as a research subject, providing scientists with a window into the thoughts of homo sapiens’ nearest living relative. Sarah’s death provides an opportunity to reflect on a foundational question: can we really know what non-human animals are thinking? Drawing on my background as a philosopher, I argue that the answer is no. There are principled limitations to our ability to understand animal thought. If humans disappeared, which species would dominate the Earth?

In a post-apocalyptic future, what might happen to life if humans left the scene? After all, humans are very likely to disappear long before the sun expands into a red giant and exterminates all living things from the Earth. Assuming that we don’t extinguish all other life as we disappear (an unlikely feat in spite of our unique propensity for driving extinction), history tells us to expect some pretty fundamental changes when humans are no longer the planet’s dominant animal species. So if we were given the chance to peek forward in time at the Earth some 50m years after… This story continues at The Next Web...

PUBG for PC may finally get a clan system

It looks like clan systems are finally making their way to PUBG on the PC. A notable dataminer who goes by the name PlayerIGN claims to have gotten a hold of information as well as images that points towards the introduction of clans to the game. It should be noted that clans are already available on PUBG Mobile.According to PlayerIGN’s tweet, clans will cost 5,000 BP, and are said to accommodate a maximum of 20 members. Interestingly, clans are said to receive ‘resumes’ from prospective recruits. It is not yet known if players will be able to send custom made resumes, or if it will just be a list of stats that is sent across. Clan names are said to be between 2 to 15 characters, with a shorted clan tag that will be between two to four characters. It was also noted that players will be able to create a slogan for their clan and have ‘presentation’ of 180 characters. This will most likely act as a clan description. New stuff on Clan System:- 5,000 BP COST- Title: 2-15 char., ...

Xiaomis new patent hints at a foldable phone with penta-camera pop-up module

A new patent published by Xiaomi on November 8 shows a foldable phone that has five cameras in the pop-up module. The phone has an outward-folding screen and depending on how a user holds it, the penta-camera setup can be used as front or rear cameras. The left side of the phone, when unfolded, is thicker, which could house the battery and other components that make up the phone. While there is a patent it doesn’t mean that we may see a real product anytime soon or at all. However, Xiaomi is yet to unveil its foldable phone, which was teased in a video of a working prototype. There is no word on the launch date of the same. Machine learning algorithms and the art of hyperparameter selection

Machine learning algorithms are used everywhere from a smartphone to a spacecraft. They tell you the weather forecast for tomorrow, translate from one language into another, and suggest what TV series you might like next on Netflix. These algorithms automatically adjust (learn) their internal parameters based on data. However, there is a subset of parameters that is not learned and that have to be configured by an expert. Such parameters are often referred to as “hyperparameters” — and they have a big impact on our lives as the use of AI increases. For example, the tree depth in a decision… This story continues at The Next Web...

CHEAP: 5 great Singles’ Day deals, just for you

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Today, if you didn’t know, is Singles’ Day. While this really isn’t much of a thing in Europe and the US, it’s big business in China. And, because China is big business, plenty of companies are doing their best to spread it worldwide. Which is great news for you. Basically, Singles’ Day is — as the name suggests — a shopping holiday dedicated (I guess) to people who are single. Nokia 82 may come in only one variant with 5G support

Rumors of the Nokia 8.2 have been swirling around the internet for months now. Just last month, reports claimed that the device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 735 chipset and will have a 5G variant. Now, the same source, NokiaPowerUser (NPU) claims that the Nokia 8.2 will only come in a single variant with 5G support. That means, there won’t be a 4G-only version for the same. Further, the report adds that the Nokia 8.2 will not launch in December, but the launch is set for MWC 2020 next year. The 4G version of Nokia 8.2 is speculated to launch next month, which makes sense since the Nokia 8.1 was launched the same time last year. However, according to NPU, since the Nokia 8.2 will come equipped with 5G support, HMD won't announce it until MWC 2020. For reference, MWC 2020 is expected to take place in late February. Further, HMD Global has already confirmed that it will launch affordable 5G Nokia smartphones next year to reach a wider audience. Coming back to the NPU r...

NASA deploys first experimental all-electric plane with 14 electric motors

Yes, going fully electric on the road is the dream of lawmakers and automakers alike. But who said it isn't the dream of space agencies and aerospace firms as well? Alleged OnePlus 8 Pro prototype with dual punch-hole display leaked

OnePlus 8 Pro rumours have already started hitting the internet. After the leaked renders, a OnePlus 8 Pro prototype has been spotted in the wild. The alleged OnePlus 8 Pro images hint at dual punch-hole display and a curved display like the OnePlus 7 Pro. The rear panel shows off the quad-camera setup with three lenses and an LED flash arranged in a vertical strip and a fourth camera placed alongside it.Earlier, @OnLeaks posted various images of the OnePlus 8 Pro. They showed that a design change seems to be in ṭhe works for OnePlus’ next flagship. The key change in its design is the presence of a punch-hole display and a quad-camera setup at the back. If this turns out to be true, OnePlus 8 Pro will be the company’s first phone with a quad-camera setup. The newly spotted images of the alleged OnePlus 8 Pro prototype can be seen sporting a different gradient appeal than the OnePlus 7T series. How to choose a database for your application

Picking the “right” database can often be critical to the success of an application. Rather than taking the advice of vendors or using a database because you already happen to have it, it’s useful to consider the fundamental purpose and requirements of the data store. These are the most important questions to ask when you are picking a database:How much data do you expect to store when the application is mature? How many users do you expect to handle simultaneously at peak load? What availability, scalability, latency, throughput, and data consistency does your application need? How often will your database schemas change? What is the geographic distribution of your user population? What is the natural “shape” of your data?Does your application need online transaction processing (OLTP), analytic queries (OLAP), or both? What ratio of reads to writes do you expect in production?Do you need geographic queries and/or full-text queries? What are your preferred programming languages?Do y...

The Indian government has played down fears of mass surveillance in response to concerns that its proposed facial recognition system lacks adequate oversight. MediaTek will be announcing a 5G chip on November 26

MediaTek has been working hard on improving its market presence and compete more fiercely with the likes of Qualcomm and Huawei in the mobile chipset industry for Android devices. The Helio G90 series that the company announced earlier this year has proved the company can also design powerful SoCs meant for high-end gaming. With that out of the way, the company has been focusing its efforts in designing a 5G chipset for the high-end segment, but more surprisingly, it’s also bringing 5G connectivity to affordable mid-range segments.MediaTek already has the Helio M70 5G modem that relies on the sub-6GHz frequency to deliver 5G connectivity. According to a company roadmap, the 5G modems are expected to hit the markets in Q1 2020. It seems the company’s plans are going as per schedule as MediaTek recently sent out invites to a November 26 event to unveil its first 5G chip at the MediaTek Summit.MediaTek has also disclosed how the chip will look in promotions leading up to the event, as...

Samsung Galaxy S11 to come in three screen sizes and five variants overall: Report

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11 will be available in three screen sizes and five variants overall. Known leakster Evan Blass has tweeted highlighting the screen size and some features of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11 flagship smartphone. In his tweet, he says that the Galaxy S11 will be available in three screen sizes - 6.4 or 6.2-inch being the smallest one, 6.4-inch being the mid-sized one and 6.7-inch being the largest one. He goes on to say that the two small variants of the smartphone will come in 5G and LTE variants whereas the largest 6.7-inch variant will be 5G only. He goes on to say that all the variants will have a curved glass design, and we shouldn’t expect a Galaxy S10e like flat panel on the smartphone. As far as launch is concerned, the smartphones are traditionally shown off around MWC, and the tweet highlights that the smartphone will be unveiled mid-to-late February. Interestingly, Samsung isn’t g...

Instagram Like counts will disappear for the US users starting next week: CEO

Earlier this year, Instagram started testing hiding like counts on the app. The company started testing the feature in Canada in May and added six more countries, namely, Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Japan in July. Now, Instagram CEO, Adam Mosseri has confirmed that like counts will disappear for some users in the US starting next week. The latest development follows after Facebook said in September that it is dabbling with no longer making a public display of how many "likes" are racked up by posts.Mosseri tweeted, "Heads up! We've been testing making likes private on Instagram in a number of countries this year. We're expanding those tests to include a small portion of people in the US next week. Looking forward to the feedback.”It is said that social media use may influence mental health, including leading to depression and anxiety. Worldwide smartphone shipments rise by 08 in Q3 2019: IDC

It looks like global smartphone shipments have increased as compared to last year, but not by much. According to a report by IDC, worldwide smartphone shipments increased by 0.8% year over year in Q3 2019. However, the report also notes that this also reverses a seven quarter decline in shipments. The report states that in total, companies shipped 358.3 million smartphones during the quarter, which was an 8.1% from the previous quarter. It also notes that India led emerging markets. As far as China was concerned, there was a greater consolidation for the top 5 brands in Q3. IDC’s report also notes that the top Chinese brands all increased their local shipments in preparation for November 11, which is celebrated as Single’s Day and is the equivalent of Black Friday in the US.     "The market returning to positive growth shows the resilience of this industry as well as the ongoing demand for mobile phones, all in the face of many global macroeconomic challenges," said Ryan Reith,...

The Google Pixel 4 isn't getting monthly Android updates on time and that's a problem

What gives, Google? It’s November 8, and the Android November Security Update has been out for more than four days now. It includes the usual patches as well as camera and Smooth Display improvements that should fix some of the issues I had when I reviewed the phone last month. That’s the good news. The bad news is my Pixel 4 XL hasn’t gotten it yet. I’ve restarted and pounded the check for updates button, but nada. What’s more frustrating is my Pixel 3 does have it.And I’m not alone. A growing thread on the Pixel Phone Help forums was finally addressed by a Gold Product Expert, who are described as “Trusted members who are knowledgeable and active contributors.” On Thursday night, they issued a terse response to the hundred-plus comments: “The update is rolling out and you should see it in the next few weeks.”To read this article in full, please click here...

OpenAI releases final version of the AI text generator it once deemed too dangerous

When is an AI ‘too smart’? Apparently, when it can be used to fool humans. OpenAI, the guys who previously created an AI that could play and win a game of DOTA 2 against top human players, have released the final version of their GPT-2 AI that can generate coherent paragraphs of text, and can perform rudimentary reading comprehension, machine translation, question answering and summarization without the need for task specific training.GPT-2 is also able to generate sentences in Chinese, but the only reason OpenAI published the software as it is now is to show off to the world that it can be used to fool humans. The original GPT-2, released in 2015 and used in tests of Go, Go-playing AI and others, was not a complete piece of software and used some techniques to fool humans, notably using a hidden Markov model to generate sentences. So what’s so smart or dangerous about that you may ask? Well, in a blog post back in February, OpenAI said that they will be releasing a smaller model...

PNY GeForce GTX 1660 Super Single Fan review: Tiny graphics card, big performance

Pound for pound, Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660 Super is the best GPU you can buy for 1080p gaming—and the graphics card we’re reviewing today proves that it doesn’t even need much weight to push out those blisteringly fast frames. The PNY GTX 1660 Super Single Fan, well, puts a miniscule single-fan spin on Nvidia’s newest GPU, making it easy to slip into almost any system. Even better, it sticks to the GeForce GTX 1660 Super’s baseline $230 price, rather than inching upwards into GTX 1660 Ti territory. How does this smaller-statured graphics card compare against the dual-fan (and just as appropriately named) Asus Dual GTX 1660 Super EVO OC we originally reviewed? Let’s dig in.To read this article in full, please click here...

Samsung patents space zoom ahead of Galaxy S11 launch, S11e battery capacity leaked

With 2019’s onslaught of smartphone launches now coming to a close, Samsung is already gearing up for the reveal of its next flagship, the Galaxy S11. We have had multiple leaks and rumours revealing information about the upcoming flagship series, but the latest report gives us a peek into something really interesting.Samsung filed a patent with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) called “Space Zoom”. The patent is described as lossless zoom and it is quite likely that the S11 will attempt to do what the Pixel 4 is being known for — Astrophotography. The patent describes it as the ability to zoom in on a subject without losing quality. It sounds like what Huawei has been doing with the P30 Pro or Oppo with the Reno 10X Zoom. The former even claimed that you can take shots of the moon using the mode. Samsung could have figured out a way to implement periscope telephoto zoom lens. It could also just be a way of applying digital zoom in tandem with image stackin...

Beyond lithium-ion: next generation battery research underway

New smartphones, portable devices and electric cars may get a lot of the public's attention but all of them are dependent on batteries to make them run. Most current devices use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries—technology that was first commercialized in the early 1990s. Lithium-ion batteries offered a longer life span, improved discharge and better efficiency over older rechargeable batteries but also come with some notable disadvantages. Lithium can be relatively expensive and difficult to recycle, and lithium-based batteries can have issues with overheating....

HP Omen 17 (2019) review: Solid performance that's shockingly affordable

HP’s Omen 17 gaming laptops have a reputation with us that can be summarized in four words: solid performance. Shockingly affordable. That’s particularly true for the Omen 17. Is it a looker? Debatable. Is it the best gaming laptop? Definitely not. But HP always manages to cram more hardware than you’d expect under the hood, then sell the Omen 17 way below market rate.I’m not sure how HP pulls off this bit of wizardry, but it’s made the Omen 17 a hit. And the trend continues, as the 2019 model we’re testing (poetically monikered the 17-cb0040nr) packs in some of the latest and greatest CPUs and GPUs for hundreds of dollars less than the competition. To read this article in full, please click here...

How to future-proof cloud applications

Chances are, you’re either building a net-new application in the cloud or using native technology such as serverless or machine learning. Or, you’re porting an application to the cloud, either refactoring it to leverage native services, or lifting and shifting with little or no modification to the code or data. How do you ensure these applications last more than a few years on the cloud? In other words, how do you future-proof them? I have a few core recommendations.[ Keep up with the latest developments in cloud computing with InfoWorld’s Cloud Computing Report newsletter ]First, watch the use of native cloud services that are unlikely to be around long term. Although everyone is fond of serverless systems these days, those systems will certainly change within a few years. Sometimes the changes will favor the applications, meaning the applications will have ongoing enhancements; or the system might fall by the wayside in the cloud marketplace if the technology it uses falls ou...

The real number of open source developers

GitHub just released its latest State of the Octoverse report with some astonishing numbers. Unfortunately, some of the numbers—like the claim of 40 million developers—are not just astonishing, they’re wrong.I’m not suggesting some nefarious intent to deceive. GitHub folks aren’t like that. But by conflating accounts with developers, GitHub isn’t helping us get any closer to accurate data on the developer population. More importantly, we don’t need to artificially inflate developer numbers in order to establish their importance.[ Also on InfoWorld: 9 lies programmers tell themselves ]40 million, sure. But 40 million of what? It’s surprising that GitHub bothers to lead with the 40 million number at all, given that it immediately adds a caveat: 40 million refers to “the total number of non-spammy user accounts on GitHub as of September 30, 2019, regardless of their activity status.” OK, so we’re not talking about developers, but 40 million accounts is still impressi...

How hot is your PC’s graphics card temperature? AMD on Thursday officially unwrapped two new Threadripper 3 CPUs with 24 and 32 cores, respectively. The company also announced an unlocked Athlon and said its 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X will finally go on sale on November 28.The two new Threadripper CPUs are the biggest news. AMD will sell a 24-core Threadripper 3960X for $1,399. The chip is built on a 7nm process, features 140MB of cache, and will have a base clock of 3.8GHz and boost of 4.5GHz. China imposes online video game curfew on minors in order to curb addiction

It looks like China is resorting to some pretty drastic steps in an effort to curb video game addiction among minors. The government of China has released a notice that lists down six measures that will be put in place to curb online video gaming among minors. Specifically, those aged below 18 years. These range from a blanket curfew at night to a limit on the amount of money minors can spend in micro-transactions in a month. The notice states that minors will not be allowed to play from 10pm to 8am. Further, they can only play for 90 minutes during weekdays and three hours during weekends. This rule needs to be enforced by guardians as well as online game companies. As far as microtransactions go, minors under the age of 16 will no longer be able to spend over CNY 200 (about Rs 2,000) in a single month and no more than CNY 50 (about Rs 500) on a single transactions. Those aged between 16 and 18 are not allowed to spend over CNT 400 (about Rs 4000) a month and over CNY 100 (about Rs 1...

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches on PC with a ton of game-breaking bugs and issues

Well, it looks like Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 has hit a few snags with its PC release. The game was teased to be launched on PC for quite some time now and after it hit the platform, users have already begun complaining about game breaking bugs. There were a ton of problems reported such as launcher issues and game crashes. Users have also reported that even graphics cards like the 2080ti were being crushed under the weight of the game. Clearly, the company did not plan ahead for these types of issues and is now looking at patching the problem up. Even the usual fixes for these kinds of issues have been unsuccessful in fixing what can be termed as a broken mess. Players were excited to see Rockstar’s Western epic make its way to the PC but not in this manner. Rockstar have published an article with various steps to troubleshoot the myriad issues plaguing players but even that hasn’t seemed to help matters. Google is doing more to keep malicious apps away from the Play Store. The internet giant is partnering with three cybersecurity companies to flag malicious apps before they’re published on the Play Store. Google is calling this collaboration the App Defense Alliance. With over 2.5 billion active users, Android is the most popular operating system in the world and Google claims that sheer number makes Android “an attractive target” for malicious activities. Android apps have been known to carry hidden malware or spyware an in some cases, even ransomware. The malicious apps have known to infect smartphones siphoning off people’s data to third party servers. Google has had to step in multiple times to take down these apps, but now it seems the company wishes to nip the bud before it’s even planted.App Defense Alliance will see Google partner up with security companies ESET, Lookout and Zimperium who will scan for malicious apps before they hit the Play Store.Google already has Go...

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 15-inch (Ryzen 7) review: The price tag climbs, but battery life drops

With Microsoft’s Ryzen 7-powered 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 joining the Ryzen 5-powered 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 already in our lab, we have an opportunity to answer the question: Does the upgrade justify the price premium? Our answer: Probably not, though we’ve provided several metrics to help you decide for yourself. It’s not an academic question. At the time of the review, the AMD Ryzen 7 3780U cost $400 more than our Ryzen 5-based review unit—though that factors in a 256GB bump in the SSD size, too. Because our performance benchmarks don’t factor in storage space, we can make clear comparisons between each model. Mozilla Firefox 72 to cut down on browser notification prompts

In an effort to cut down on annoying pop-ups, Mozilla have announced that they are changing the way the Firefox browser handles notification requests. In a blog post, the company announced that Firefox version 72 will display desktop notifications in the form of a small icon in the URL. Users can then click this icon in order to see the message. Mozilla says that it came to this decision following the results of its own research which showed how unpopular notifications were. Smart speakers vulnerable to light commands that can be used to shop online, open garage doors and more

Using voice commands to control devices is nothing new as most of us are now more or less used to getting answers from a smart assistant on our phones and smart speakers. Google Home and Amazon Echo smart speakers are also commonplace and their market share is steadily increasing since they offer increased convenience of controlling other smart devices via voice. Of course, there are a multitude of privacy concerns when you have a device that keeps a virtual ear out for your commands and sometimes ‘inadvertently’ eavesdrops during your talks, but what if we told you that there might even possibly be a bigger threat looming? Researchers at the University of Electro-Communications (Tokyo) and the University of Michigan have found an unconventional way to communicate with devices that work on voice commands. Takeshi Sugawara, Benjamin Cyr, Sara Rampazzi, Daniel Genkin and Kevin Fu discovered something called Light Commands, which employs modulating an electric signal in the intensity...

How to use Windows' Your Phone app to connect your phone to your PC

Why does Microsoft think you need the Windows 10 Your Phone app? Because it preserves the most important functions of a phone: access to your photos, messages, notifications, calls, and even your phone’s home screen—without the need to remove your phone from your pocket. That might sound ridiculous, but think again: Once you pull your phone from your pocket, you’re instantly lost in messages, email, Instagram—all of these distracting from your focus and flow while working on your PC. Theoretically, you could refuse to open Outlook on your PC and use your phone instead. But you don’t, right? 3 models for open source governance

In part 3 of this article, I detailed several economic theories on common goods management. In this part, we’ll explore how to apply these theories to the issue of open source sustainability.Studying the work of Garrett Hardin (Tragedy of the Commons), the prisoner’s dilemma, Mancur Olson (Collective Action), and Elinor Ostrom’s core design principles for self-governance, a number of shared patterns emerge. When applied to open source, I’d summarize them as follows:Common goods fail because of a failure to coordinate collective action. To scale and sustain an open source project, open source communities need to transition from individual, uncoordinated action to cooperative, coordinated action.Cooperative, coordinated action can be accomplished through privatization, centralization, or self-governance. All three work—and can even be mixed.Successful privatization, centralization, and self-governance all require clear rules around membership, appropriation rights, and contrib...

C challenges Java in language popularity survey

After nearly five years as the leader of the Tiobe index of programming language popularity, Java is now in a virtual dead heat with C. C trails Java by a mere fraction of a percent, according to the Tiobe Index of November 2019.While Java is still ranked number one, with a rating of 16.246 percent, C is right behind it at 16.037 percent, a difference of just .209 percentage points. Tiobe reasons that C’s fortunes are on the upswing because of its use in Internet of Things development. The company speculates that C could have the number one ranking by the end of the year. Java has held Tiobe’s top spot since April 2015.To read this article in full, please click here...

Is the Huawei ban finally over?

The U.S. Commerce Department announced it would begin approving licenses for some of the companies to resume business with Chinese tech giant Huawei. Data science and cloud computing win most political campaigns

Back in college I did computer consulting for political consulting firms in the Washington D.C. area. Working on both sides of the political spectrum, I set up CP/M-based PCs (dating myself) on these new things called local area networks. The idea was to provide basic campaign processes, such as direct mail and phone list management, to support state, local, and federal campaigns. Pretty simple.Fast forward to 2020. The systems in campaign offices are 10,000 times more sophisticated, typically with data moved out to public cloud providers, and advanced data science maximizing the effectiveness of known data for campaigns. The most valuable person in a modern campaign is no longer the campaign manager, but those charged with leveraging the data to effectively target campaign resources. Those who do this best will likely win.To read this article in full, please click here...

10 picky reasons to pick AWS—or Azure or Google Cloud

The cloud began as a commodity business. Oh sure, there were small differences like the size of the RAM or the way the virtual CPUs were measured but the cloud offered a seemingly endless supply of seemingly identical machines. They ran the same distros and responded the same way on the command line. And if you snapped your fingers, the cloud service providers would give you root on another.Keeping everything the same was the easiest way to lure the developers from the safety of their air-conditioned racks in the same building. Commodity machines mean there are no surprises or glitches. All of the clouds offered the most popular operating systems where all of the bits were arranged exactly the same.To read this article in full, please click here...

Finding commonality among classes makes for effective object-oriented programming. Software Maintenance is a Solution, Not a Problem (An Excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0) By Robert L. Glass

The traditional, problem-oriented view of maintenance says that our chief goal in maintenance should be to reduce costs. I think that's the wrong emphasis. If maintenance is a solution instead of a problem, we can quickly see that what we really want to do is more of it, not less of it. And the emphasis, when we do it, should be on maximizing effectiveness, and not on minimizing cost. An excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0.Click here for the full article....
