Best password managers: Reviews of the top products

We are terrible at passwords. We suck at creating them (the top two most popular remain “123456” and “password”), we share them way too freely, and we forget them all the time. Indeed, the very thing that can ensure our online security has become our biggest obstacle to it. This is what makes a good password manager essential. To read this article in full, please click here...

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Twitter lists are a useful, if little-discussed feature that allow you to group your many different follows into coherent categories. If you’re like me and follow people from a wide swathe of society, you might find it helpful to break them down into lists. That way you can check those lists when you’re interested in seeing updates from, for example, personal friends or news sites. But if you’re like me in another way, you’re kind… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Twitter...

A beginner’s guide to the AI apocalypse: Wall-E syndrome

This is the second article in TNW’s “A beginner’s guide to the AI apocalypse” series highlighting the potential existential threats AI poses to humankind. Read the first article, “Misaligned objectives,” here.  Artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize every facet of technology from healthcare to space exploration. Simply put: all technology in the year 2020 and beyond is AI technology. But, what if making everything better actually makes everything worse? Wall-E syndrome (not a real thing) describes the fear of a future dystopia inhabited by oblivious people who are totally reliant on technology to perform even the simplest of tasks. The idea… This story continues at The Next Web...

100 seconds to midnight: Why we’re closer to Doomsday than ever

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a non-profit group dedicated to monitoring the potential for global catastrophe, last night set the Doomsday Clock forward. We’re now 100 seconds away from midnight. As Douglas Adams was fond of writing: don’t panic. This doesn’t literally mean we’ll all be dead in the next minute-and-a-half. As the Bulletin puts it: The Doomsday Clock is a design that warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making. It is a metaphor, a reminder of the perils we must address if we are to survive on… This story continues at The Next Web...

This ‘Ultrasonic gripper’ lets robots move things without touching them

When we think about robots working in factories and assembly lines, we often imagine large robotic arms moving heavy components around. But there’s also automation for small fragile materials as well, requiring the lightest touch to move. No problem: Robots may soon be able to move small objects without touching them at all. Marcel Schuck, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), is developing a method for robots to carry small objects without touching them at all. Ultrasound waves can generate a pressure wave that humans can’t see or hear. Protecting wideband RF systems in congested electromagnetic environments

Today's electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is a scarce resource that is becoming increasingly congested and contested as friendly, unfriendly, and neutral entities vie for available spectrum resources at any given time, location, and frequency. Within the Department of Defense (DoD), radio frequency (RF) systems, such as communications networks and radar, must operate within this congested environment and contend with mission-compromising interference from both self- and externally generated signals. A desire to support wideband EM spectrum operations also adds to the burden, as current approaches to mitigating wideband receiver interference are sub-optimal and force compromises around signal sensitivity, bandwidth usage, and system performance. Further, in the case of self-interference, traditional mitigation approaches such as antenna isolation alone are often not sufficient for protecting wideband receivers....

What designers have to gain by thinking like social workers

“I’ve got a soul that can’t sleep at night when something ain’t right.” These are the song lyrics to “Power of Equality” which is the first song on Red Hot Chili Pepper’s, breakthrough album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The song goes on to address racial injustice, white supremacy, and self-serving politicians. A few songs later, lead singer Anthony Kedis sings about his desire to have a lady intensely kiss him in the aptly titled song “Suck My Kiss.” While The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are no Rage Against the Machine, they do contain multitudes. Prehistoric microbes valorize carbon dioxide under high pressure to 'green gas'

A completely new kind of bioreactor for the biological production of methane has enabled the use of extremely high pressure levels for the first time—and set new efficiency standards for the conversion of CO2 and H2 into methane. This significant improvement compared with conventional bioreactors is down to billions of microorganisms that only truly come to life under extreme pressure, as well as Austrian company Krajete GmbH, which designed the bioreactor and has now built the first pilot plant for testing the technology. Successful installation required a combination of experience of implementing chemical facilities and biological expertise....

iPhone 12 rumors and leaks: 4 things we expect from Apple in 2020

Even though Apple launched its trio of iPhone 11 models a mere four months ago in September, the rumor mill is already looking across the horizon and speculating about 2020 and the upcoming iPhone 12 (some rumors have already begun for the 2021 iPhones). Keep in mind that we don't know what the new iPhones' official names will be—and Apple has not confirmed anything about them—so we'll go with the iPhone 12 for now. In addition to adding 3-D depth-sensing to its rear cameras and new screen sizes, it's also being speculated that Apple will belatedly include a feature that would make it competitive with its rivals: 5G connectivity....

MG ZS EV officially launched in India starting at Rs 2088 lakh

When MG Motor announced the ZS EV in early December last year, we received little information about the pricing and availability of its all-electric SUV. Today, the British auto brand has officially lifted the veil on some of those key details. Available in the market starting today, the MG ZS EV costs Rs 20.88 lakh for the base ‘Excite’ variant and Rs 23.58 lakh for the high-end ‘Exclusive’ variant. That said, the first 2,800 customers who pre-ordered the ZS EV before January 17 enjoy a discount of Rs 1 lakh on both variants.Being a proper electric vehicle (EV), the MG ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh battery that's good for a claimed driving range of 340 kilometres on a single charge. Because it's IP67-rated, the battery is resistant to dust and water (up to 1 metre depth). The electric motor that the battery is connected to puts out a total of 143 horsepower, which can launch the car from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 8.5 seconds. The ZS EV comes with a number of AC and DC ch...

Vodafone announces Rs 558 recharge plan with 3GB data per day, unlimited calling

Indian telecom companies recently announced new pricing for their offerings, with the hope of bolstering their earnings. With increased tariffs, companies expect to increase the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and while we already know the new plans, Vodafone-Idea has now listed another one for its consumers. The company has introduced a new Rs 558 prepaid recharge plan for its consumers, which comes with unlimited calling, daily data and free daily SMS. The recharge has a 56-day validity and is clearly aimed at consumers who need more data per day as one will get 3GB data per day under the plan. The Rs 558 prepaid plan also offers unlimited calling without any kind of capping or FUP. This means that one can place calls on any network, without paying anything extra. This is in contrast to Reliance Jio’s service, which is now levying a 6 paise per minute charge from its consumers as IUC. Coming back to Vodafone’s new prepaid plan, the telco is also offering 100 daily SMS and as me...

Conway’s Law and DevSecOps: How communication affects security

Conway’s Law describes how companies develop software. Broadly speaking, it means that software projects tend to be designed and delivered based on the same approach that a company takes to communicating internally. Conway’s Law is quoted as: Any organization that designs a system (defined more broadly here than just information systems) will inevitably produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization‘s communication structure. Today, we have seen DevOps and DevSecOps get adopted more readily in organizations. So will security teams find that their own approaches to keeping their companies secure will be affected by company communications models… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Security...

How to improve CI/CD with shift-left testing

Testing applications used to be a technically challenging, time-crunched activity scheduled days or weeks before an application’s release. Development teams were given the leeway to code until the eleventh hour, and testers, who did much of their work manually, had little choice but to make do with the bit of time given to them. The result was that many applications underwent substandard testing, and technology teams were forced to respond to the production issues and defects escalated by end-users and application monitoring systems. To read this article in full, please click here(Insider Story)...

Latest WhatsApp beta update brings dark mode, animated stickers might roll out soon

WhatsApp beta users are receiving a couple of new updates on Android, one of which might brighten your day a bit by making the app go dark. Beta users of the most popular online messaging app are now receiving dark mode colour themes. As one would expect, turning the option on dims the apps’ appearance by turning brightly lit background and app elements to dark grey. We received the option with WhatsApp beta version 2.20.13. Those who are already enrolled as beta testers of the app can head over to the Google Play Store to download the update. Those who want to try out the option can enrol as a beta tester from the Google Play Store listing of the app. As one will observe from the screenshots embedded below, the dark mode theme isn’t really completely black, like we have observed on some other apps. The background turns dark grey, along with UI elements like the header featuring search option and three-dot menu for navigating to settings. This particular dark theme is not like wha...

Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT review: Punching above its class

With the launch of the $279 Radeon RX 5600 XT, AMD’s finishing off the mainstream push for its cutting-edge “Navi” architecture by aiming for PC gaming’s sweet spot, the no-compromises 1080p arena currently dominated by Nvidia’s trio of GeForce GTX 1660 graphics cards. It more than gets the job done—especially if you get the right overclocked model, equipped with a supercharged BIOS.Yes, the Radeon RX 5600 XT can be much faster than AMD originally claimed, but you need to jump through some hoops to achieve those speeds if you’re an early buyer, adding a regrettable layer of confusion. In the default configuration announced at CES 2020, the card does a solid job of matching up with Nvidia’s identically priced $279 GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. It’s good! But mere days before the card’s launch, AMD sent us a new BIOS for the custom $289 Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT on our test bench. This BIOS pushed the power limits to new levels, which allowed Sapphire to crank up the ov...

Xbox Series X prototype leaks online, reveals rear port layout

Twitter user @Doug_DragoX has posted a picture of the front and the back of the prototype Xbox Series X. The images do seem believable simply because of the serial number at the back, and the fact that Xbox head, Phill Spencer has said that he has the console sitting under his TV. Since the look of the Series X was revealed at the Game Awards 2019 along with Hellblade: Senua’s Saga, one can believe that the leaked images are real. From what we can see, the front looks in line with what was showcased. We have a slit for the disc drive above which is the sync button for the controller. There is also a USB port and the Xbox logo shaped power button on the front. Moving to the back, we have ample ventilation.  For connectivity, there is the power port which looks like it will have the same power cable as the Xbox One X, an HDMI port, two USB ports, an optical port and a big slit which is presumably the service port. There is also a Kensington lock port at the back.At the back of the S...

Purported Huawei P40 Pro live photos leaked, revealing curved display

Alleged live images of Huawei P40 Pro have surfaced online. The P40 Pro is expected to launch alongside a regular P40 and a P40 Pro Premium Edition. Further, the rear of the purported Huawei P40 Pro is sealed by the case.Huawei is said to use ceramic in the build of P40 Pro. Huawei P40 Pro will reportedly...

How to use, modify, and create templates in Word

In Microsoft Word, templates are pre-designed documents that you or someone else (such as Microsoft) creates to use as a pattern for a project. The template could be for a business card, brochure, resume, presentation...the list goes on. Regardless of the purpose, templates provide the design consistency that any organization (or individual) needs to look professional. (You can also find templates for Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications, but in this article we’re focusing on Microsoft Word.) The template contains a specific layout, style, design and, sometimes, fields and text that are common to every use of that template. Some templates are so complete (such as business cards), you only have to change the individual’s name, phone number, and email address. Others, such as business reports or brochures, could require that everything is changed except the layout and design. To read this article in full, please click here...

Samsung Galaxy S20 preview: This one goes past 11 with more screen, more cameras, more everything

In just about a month, Samsung will take the wraps off the new Galaxy S phone, the first premium Android phone of 2020. It’s shaping up to be a great one. Not only will it bring the latest processor, oodles of RAM, and tons of storage, but it’s also expected to make a major leap where it counts: the camera and display. It’s so big, in fact, it’ll likely get a new name. A whole bunch of recent rumors and leaks (including the image at the top of this article) are claiming that Samsung is going to switch to whole numbers for the next Galaxy S phone and jump all the way to the Galaxy S20 (so for the sake of simplicity, that’s what we’ll call it here). This is all likely more marketing than magnitude, but Samsung’s new phone may still be worthy of a ten-fold jump in numbering. 2 cloud and AI myths you shouldn’t believe

In tech circles, we have two primary faults: We’re overly eager to usher in the future and ironically too quick to disregard it when it doesn’t come as fast as we projected. Take, for example, two persistent myths making the rounds today: First, that cloud spend is sending data center spending off a cliff and, second, that AI is overhyped snake oil that mostly fails enterprise buyers.Let’s take those in order.[ Also on InfoWorld: AI, machine learning, and deep learning: Everything you need to know ]Myth #1: Your data center is doomedGartner kicked off the first myth, with analyst Dave Cappuccio positing that 80 percent of enterprises will shutter their data centers by 2025 (compared to 10 percent that did so in 2018). Aggressive? Sure, but Cappuccio gives some solid reasons for his thinking: “As interconnect services, cloud providers, the Internet of Things (IoT), edge services, and SaaS offerings continue to proliferate, the rationale to stay in a traditional data center topo...

PC sales expected to fall after Windows 10 sales bump ends

Although analyst firms recently predicted that PC sales for 2019 would show the first signs of growth in nearly a decade, Gartner threw cold water on those findings on Tuesday: After the Windows 7 to Windows 10 migration ends, PC sales will decline once again. On the other hand, global device sales—PCs, tablets, and smartphones—should continue to grow slightly by 0.9 percent in 2020, the firm said. Of note, too, is what Gartner predicts about 5G smartphone penetration: an estimated 12 percent of smartphone shipments in 2020, growing to 43 percent in 2022.To read this article in full, please click here...

Fortnite for the iPad just received an update that adds support for 120 frames per second

Fortnite for the iPad Pro just received a massive upgrade in the form of higher frame rates giving it a massive performance boost. The update adds support for 120 frames per second which gives the game a buttery smooth visual style. As of right now, the feature is only supported by the iPad Pro 11 and the iPad Pro 12.9. Both these devices come with a Liquid Retina display that is capable of displaying 120HZ refresh rates which make it ideal for this update. The only drawback to this is that the graphical settings for Fortnite will be turned down to ‘Medium’.This will reduce the resolution of the game but that is sort of expected as running the game at 120 frames per second is not feasible with all the graphic settings turned up to ‘Epic’. The ‘high’ and ‘epic’ settings on Fortnite come with 60fps and 30fps, respectively. Another upgrade to the game is support that allows users to click on the L3 and R3 buttons on a controller that is supported by iOS. There have been ...

Puma Smartwatch review: A smartwatch that’s best when the smart stuff is turned off

As soon as I took the Puma Smartwatch out of the box, I wanted to like it. Unlike the sea of bulky, all-black Wear OS entries of late, the Puma Smartwatch is lightweight and sporty, with a slimming aesthetic and minimal single-button design. Add to that Puma's fitness pedigree, Qualcomm’s newest Wear 3100 processor, and built-in GPS, and I had high hopes that I was strapping a rare Wear OS winner to my wrist. Michael Simon/IDGThe single-button design eliminates some of the confusion from the Fossil Sport's trio of buttons. To read this article in full, please click here...

New PS5 controller patent suggests built-in mic, console unveil expected in February 2020

Another day, another PS5 story. The new information comes from a controller patent filed by Sony. The patent says that the controller could have a built-in microphone. Please note that just because the patent is filed does not mean that it will make an appearance on the controller. But it is possible that we will see a microphone in the controller. The use cases are significant - headset free chat, issuing commands, launching games, requesting guides when stuck in a game (isn’t that something Google Stadia promised?), so on and so forth. From the leaks of the controller, it is clear that the PS5 controller will be slightly chunkier than the PS4 controller and could feature a slightly larger trackpad. It isn't clear whether the PS5 controller will bring with it buttons at the back by default, but with the new $30 back button accessory for the PS4 controller, the internet is abuzz that the PS5 controller could come with back buttons built-in. Currently, back buttons are available only...

Cloud spending set to outpace traditional on-prem

According to IDC, in 2019 the public cloud saw little change in market share, making up just more than 30 percent of the overall cloud IT infrastructure market. Of course, this is likely to grow significantly, expected to reach almost 40 percent by 2023.However, it’s a bit of a surprise that IDC is also expecting public and private cloud spending to outperform “traditional IT spending” in 2020. We can define traditional as anything that’s not a private or public cloud. Indeed, in 2019 we saw the balance nearly equal at 49.8 percent for public and private cloud. This milestone will be easily bypassed this year.[ Also on InfoWorld: Tiny clouds taking on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud ]Although many who follow the hype thought perhaps this shift took place a few years back, this is actually much earlier than I expected, and perhaps faster than most enterprises can manage. To read this article in full, please click here...

They’re the components that go together to construct a modern application. Wrapping as many of those components as possible into a container makes a lot of sense, giving you a simpler deployment model. But that leaves a new set of questions: How do you manage those containers and how do you deploy them across a global-scale cloud application? To read this article in full, please click here(Insider Story)...

Samsung invests 500 million to start manufacturing smartphone displays in India

A new report has revealed Samsung’s plans to invest $500 million in a display manufacturing facility in India. The information was part of the company’s filing to local regulators earlier this month. Samsung already has a massive manufacturing facility in Noida for manufacturing smartphones and the new facility will be setup on the same land. Samsung is currently the majority manufacturer of AMOLED panels in smartphones, supplying the component to Apple and many others and has often had struggled with meeting demands. With a new display manufacturing facility in India, Samsung should be able to greatly increase its output. However, that is not the only benefit that Samsung is set to gain. The Indian Government had implemented the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) back in 2016, with the goal of encouraging smartphone companies to wholly manufacture their devices in India. Given that most companies would have to setup infrastructure to meet the goals, the government had broken the ...

Four years into consumer virtual reality, I finally feel excited again. The hardware is great, and cheaper than ever before. The games are promising, albeit few. And there’s a sense that maybe the “We need software to sell hardware to make developing software worthwhile” vicious cycle has finally been overcome. Maybe.I could be wrong. I certainly hate to get excited about virtual reality’s prospects in 2020, in a “Fool me twice” sort-of way. I’ve had my heart broken by VR before. And yet…To read this article in full, please click here...

Microsoft didn't win the PC turf war. Sony never showed up.

This week, Kotaku reported that PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn may come to the PC in the near future. And let me first say, it’s interesting this became big news because when Quantic Dream announced that Detroit: Become Human was coming to PC last year—another Sony-published game—it didn’t inspire nearly the same levels of pontificating about Sony’s intentions for the PC.Of course, people generally praised Horizon: Zero Dawn and disliked Detroit. Maybe that’s the only difference, that Horizon is seen as one of Sony’s “prestige” games. To read this article in full, please click here...

Best antivirus: Keep your Windows PC safe from spyware, Trojans, malware, and more

Antivirus software is nearly as crucial as a PC’s operating system. Even if you’re well aware of potential threats and practice extreme caution, some threats just can’t be prevented without the extra help of an AV program—or a full antivirus suite. You could, for example, visit a website that unintentionally displays malicious ads. Or accidentally click on a phishing email (it happens!). Or get stung by a zero-day threat, where an undisclosed bug in Windows, your browser, or an installed program gives hackers entry to your system. We’re not suggesting that PC security software is fool-proof. Antivirus software often can’t do much to stop zero-day exploits, for example. But it can detect when the undisclosed vulnerability is used to install other nasty bits, like ransomware, on your machine. Anyone who actively uses email, clicks on links, and downloads programs will benefit from an antivirus suite. To read this article in full, please click here...

Best gaming mouse: Find your perfect match

The mouse is a simple tool: point and click. That’s it. But if you’re a PC gamer, you know that pushing virtual paper around on your desktop isn’t the same as fragging bots and shooting zombies. (Not even remotely.) What’s more, picking the right gaming mouse is an intensely personal decision. Every little detail—its overall shape and size, the shape and placement its buttons, its cable (or lack thereof), its weight, its materials—can change how you feel about it. More than any other peripheral, a mouse is the hardest to recommend, because there is no objectively perfect mouse. Everyone’s hands are different. That said, we can guide you on your search. Below are our recommendations for gaming mice, built on years of experience first and foremost as gamers, and second as writers here at PCWorld. To read this article in full, please click here...

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security review: Good protection in need of an overhaul

The more things change, the more they stay the same, the saying goes. That couldn’t be more true for our review candidate today, Check Point’s ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. We reviewed this software nearly six years ago, and in that time the Windows interface has not changed.Sure, some features have disappeared and others have taken their place, but overall it’s the same program with the same dated interface. That’s set to change, however. A Check Point spokesperson told us the company is planning a major interface and user experience overhaul for 2020.Note: This review is part of our best antivirus roundup. Go there for details about competing products and how we tested them. When you start ZoneAlarm Extreme Security the first thing you’ll notice is that it looks a little fuzzy. Chromebook fans have been able to get their game on ever since Google Stadia launched in November, but a new report from Android Police claims that more might be on the way. According to an interview with Kan Liu, Director of Product Management for Chrome OS, Google is working toward bringing Steam support to Chromebooks, too.Granted, this is Google we’re talking about, so it’s not all that surprising that they’re working on major features that may or may not get released. But taken at face value, this is a particularly interesting tidbit. It’s unclear whether Google is working in direct conjunction with Valve or if Steam support would even launch as an official feature, but Liu suggested Google is definitely serious about the project. To read this article in full, please click here...

Elder Scrolls Online's Skyrim-themed ‘Greymoor’ expansion is a missed opportunity

I had a feeling it wouldn’t be too long before The Elder Scrolls Online played its Skyrim card, particularly since the last two expansions were set in places we never saw in the most popular mainline Elder Scrolls games. And sure enough, yesterday developer ZeniMax Online revealed a trailer and some facts about ESO’s upcoming Greymoor expansion, which takes place in the upper northwest corner of the Viking-themed realm. It looks like a fun romp, especially if you’re into vampires, werewolves, and other assorted favorite Halloween costumes. It also looks and sounds a little too familiar for anyone who’s played the game in the last couple of years, and that’s not just because of the setting. Considering that we’re rapidly approaching the 10th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – one of the most popular RPGs of all time – I would’ve expected something a little more ambitious. To read this article in full, please click here...

Unison functional language touts immutable code

Billed by its creators as “a friendly programming language from the future,” the open source Unison language was founded on the core notion that code is immutable and identified by its content. Now in a public alpha release, with multiple milestone alpha releases planned, Unison is due for a production release this year. Unison is designed to offer special support for building distributed systems. Motivating Unison is the idea that technology for building software should be thoughtfully crafted in all aspects. Complexities are to be stripped away. The core developers of the language started Unison as a research project where they would be willing to rethink how programming works, one of the core developers, Paul Chiusano, said.To read this article in full, please click here...

BrandPost: Consistent SSD Performance Is Critical for Your Storage-Intensive Workloads

Solid state drive (SSD) specs often quote typical latencies—the time required by an SSD to fetch data requested by the system. But typical isn’t always representative of your workloads. You also need consistency.Think of latency as the wait time at your favorite coffee shop from the moment you walk in until you get your beverage. Sometimes no one is waiting in line, and you get your drink almost immediately. That’s low latency. But at other times, you’re sixth in line, and those before you have complex beverage orders. You could wait for many long minutes. That’s high latency. Most often, the reality is somewhere in the middle, but you still care when you experience a high-latency instance—and, in fact, you might have to plan for high latency to ensure you make it to work on time.To read this article in full, please click here...

Sourcegraph: Universal code search and intelligence

The amount of code in the world is exploding. As software becomes the fundamental driver of innovation in nearly every industry, software developers find themselves dealing with larger, more interdependent codebases. Most organizations set new records for the size of their codebase every day.In this world, traditional developer tools such as editors and IDEs fall short. They were designed for individual developers working on individual pieces of code, rather than for software teams developing large codebases at scale. In modern software organizations, searching across massive codebases, comprehending unfamiliar code, and sharing institutional knowledge become first-order concerns. Software teams need a tool that enables this universal code intelligence. To read this article in full, please click here...

How to get started with CI/CD

Your Digital Pinball Machine

I've had something of an obsession with digital pinball for years now. That recently culminated in me buying a Virtuapin Mini.OK, yes, it's an extravagance. There's no question. But in my defense, it is a minor extravagance relative to a real pinball machine. The mini is much smaller than...

Interface Oriented Design Book Excerpt: Inheritance and Interfaces (Chapter 5) By Ken Pugh

Finding commonality among classes makes for effective object-oriented programming. Often, programmers express that commonality using an inheritance hierarchy, since that is one of the first concepts taught in object-oriented programming. We're going to go to the other extreme in this chapter to explore the difference between using inheritance and using interfaces. An excerpt from Interface Oriented Design.Click here for the full article....

Career Paths for Programmers By John Bennett, Jr.

The key to maintaining a good employment outlook in IT, it seems, is to move out of programming and up into more business-oriented IT positions such as systems analyst, business analyst, project manager, or systems architect. However, a computer programmer can't just decide to become a systems analyst or project manager overnight.Click here for the full article....

Test Smarter, Not Harder By Scott Sehlhorst

When we’re testing any software, we are faced with the tradeoff of cost and benefit of testing. With complex software, the costs of testing can grow faster than the benefits of testing. If we apply techniques like the ones in this article, we can dramatically reduce the cost of testing our software. This is what we mean when we say test smarter, not harder.Click here for the full article....

The Many Flavors of Testing (An Excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0) By Robert L. Glass

Once we realize that we are committed to a future full of testing, it is worth exploring what testing really means. I would assert that there are several flavors of testing, and that all too often when we speak of testing we consider far too few of those flavors. Software Maintenance is a Solution, Not a Problem (An Excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0) By Robert L. Glass

The traditional, problem-oriented view of maintenance says that our chief goal in maintenance should be to reduce costs. I think that's the wrong emphasis. If maintenance is a solution instead of a problem, we can quickly see that what we really want to do is more of it, not less of it. And the emphasis, when we do it, should be on maximizing effectiveness, and not on minimizing cost. An excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0.Click here for the full article....

Weinberg on Writing: The Fieldstone Method - Banishing Writer's Block By Gerald M Weinberg

In his new book, acclaimed consultant, teacher, and author Jerry Weinberg introduces his approach to writing called The Fieldstone Method. In today's world of blogging and "agile publishing," Weinberg's evolutionary, non-linear method is especially welcome. This excerpt explains how Fieldstoning can break the cycle of writer's block.Click here for the full article....

Stunted Growth: Subsidies and Stagnation in the Software Tools Market By Steve Benz

On the face of it, there should be a great deal of money in the software tools business, but, surprisingly, the money really isn’t there for small businesses. This article will show that the ultimate cause of the deficiency is the fact that most of the large development tools are subsidized by the sales of Operating Systems and hardware. These subsidies have the effect of diminishing the profit potential of any pure software development tool vendor and thus remove the incentive to create.Click here for the full article....
