Project Veritas ‘exposes’ CNN’s bias against Trump
The Next Web  14 Oct 2019 23:04

I don’t know how to tell you this, but at least some of the people who work at CNN have a personal bias against President Donald Trump. According to performance art group Project Veritas, CNN employee Cary Poarch came forward earlier this year with hundreds of hours of video he secretly recorded inside the network. This whistle-blower, we’re to believe, began working at CNN two years ago in an idealistic time when he had no clue the network was a left-leaning outlet. He claims getting the job was “a dream come true.” Then he found out that some of the employees, including… This story continues at The Next Web...

Disney reveals its Disney+ launch titles in the mother of all Twitter threads
The Next Web  14 Oct 2019 21:37

Disney today revealed the titles its bringing to Disney+, its streaming service. And by “revealed,” we mean one-by-one, on Twitter — a drip-feed of over 300 movies and shows. The reveal started with a rather ominous tweet that began, “It. Is. Time.” You’d be forgiven for thinking Disney had completely snapped and was ready to begin world domination. Instead it started a thread of truly epic proportions, with each title to be added to Disney+, fittingly starting with the progenitor of the whole Disney Princess schtick, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It. Is. Time. From Snow White and the… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Twitter...

Huawei’s foldable Mate X will reportedly launch this October in China
The Next Web  14 Oct 2019 20:39

Foldable phones feel like the future, but the path there isn’t easy – just ask Samsung. That phone’s early woes almost certainly influenced Huawei to delay the release of its own foldable device. The Mate X was originally slated to be released in June, but with all of the issues plaguing the Galaxy Fold – not to mention the US blacklist  – we’ve heard little about when the device would eventually hit the markets. Apparently, that might be quite soon. A report from cnBeta suggests the Mate X will arrive in China in limited quantities by the end of this… This story continues at The Next WebOr just read more coverage about: Huawei...

It’s the start of a new week, time for yet another Google leak. This time it’s for Google‘s latest voice assistant device, the Google Nest Mini. Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL could be discontinued soon

Ask a PC expert: Is an Nvidia G-Sync monitor worth it vs. AMD FreeSync?
PC World  14 Oct 2019 10:30

Nvidia’s G-Sync monitors cost a steep premium over AMD’s rival FreeSync Displays. But are they worth it, especially now that Nvidia lets you use FreeSync panels with GeForce graphics cards? It’s a complicated issue, but PCWorld graphics guru Brad Chacos unravels what you need to know in the video below. Both G-Sync and FreeSync panels revolve around the same core variable refresh rate technology, also known as adaptive sync. Standard monitors refresh their image at a constant speed, such as 60Hz or 144Hz. Adaptive sync monitors synchronize your monitor's refresh rate to your graphics card’s output—hence their name. Doing so prevents ugly screen tearing and stuttering, giving you a delicious, buttery-smooth gaming experience. To read this article in full, please click here...

Apple working on having its own 5G modem in iPhone by 2022
Digit  13 Oct 2019 12:07

Rumours have long suggested that Apple would release its first 5G-ready iPhone in 2020, with potentially all three models sporting the 5G chip. However, the 5G radio in these iPhones will be provided by Qualcomm. Now a new report by The Fast Company claims that Apple is working on developing a 5G modem in-house, with the goal of shipping it in devices by 2022, a rather ambitious goal for multiple reasons.Right now, the iPhone (all models) include a System on Chip designed by Apple while the modem continues to be a separate chip on the logicboard. Ideally, having the modem be a part of the SoC would be the best case scenario when it comes to power-efficiency. Initially, Apple had plans on working with Intel to incorporate the modem right into the A-series processors, but then, things changed drastically in April 2019. Back in 2017, Apple and Qualcomm went head-to-head in legal battles across the world due to conflict over the way Qualcomm was charging royalties. However, in an interest...

No, Intel didn't confirm its discrete Xe GPUs will support ray tracing
PC World  11 Oct 2019 20:24

And...it’s gone. Recent reports that Intel had confirmed ray tracing support in its Xe graphics cards are wrong, a company spokesman said Friday.News broke earlier this week that a briefing given to analysts in Tokyo had confirmed hardware ray tracing support in Intel’s upcoming Xe consumer graphics cards. It turns out the presenter never confirmed ray tracing support, and in fact, never even mentioned ray tracing, an Intel spokesman said.So how did multiple tech news sites come to believe it had been confirmed? Blame machine translation of a news story covering the Intel presentation. Intel officials said they believe computer-based translations of a Japanese language story on MyNavi.jp somehow conflated what was essentially a rehashed graphics presentation with the site’s speculation on upcoming graphics features in Tekken 7 into “ray tracing in Xe confirmed.” Intel says the presentation never mentioned ray tracing, nor did it “refer to the Xe graphics architecture foun...

Go big or go fast: Corsair shatters the 5GHz DDR4 barrier, G.Skill unveils a monster 256GB RAM kit
PC World  11 Oct 2019 18:14

It’s a killer time for PC memory enthusiasts. A pair of recent RAM releases should bring a smile to your face regardless of whether you’re into ultra-fast memory speeds or kits with massive capacity. On Thursday, Corsair became the first memory vendor to commercially ship DDR4 RAM that can break the 5GHz barrier on Ryzen 3000-based systems. The company’s 16GB Vengeance LPX kit, a pair of 8GB modules, are based on Micron dies and can hit 5GHz with a CAS Latency timing of 18 at 1.5 volts. If you’re shrugging because you’ve already seen people hit memory clock speeds over 5.7GHz, remember that most of memory overclocking records are performed with exotic cooling. Corsair’s announcement of a commercial product can be bought and essentially guaranteed to hit such sky-high clock and memory timings is another matter. That blistering performance doesn’t come cheap, though, as Corsair charges $1,225 for its 5GHz Vengeance LPX memory kitRemove non-product link. To read this artic...

Samsung SmartThings Wifi review: A sensible choice for smart homes, but far from the best router
PC World  11 Oct 2019 10:00

Mesh tech is as beneficial to smart home devices as it is to home networking, so it makes sense to deploy a single product that can handle both missions—provided that single device offers best-in-class performance in both areas. While the second-generation Samsung SmartThings Wifi mesh router is a great smart home hub, it’s far from being a state-of-the-art router. But if you don’t need a top-shelf router, and not everyone does, the SmartThings Wifi’s price tag and its performance as a smart home hub renders it a good enough value.SmartThings Wifi as a smart home hubIn some respects, the Samsung SmartThings Wifi three-pack reviewed here is an even better smart home hub than our top pick in that category—the third-generation Samsung SmartThings Hub—simply because it has three nodes to the Hub's one. That said, we’re sticking with our recommendation of the SmartThings Hub as the best smart home system for most people because the SmartThings Wifi router simply isn’t the b...

Cloud architecture that avoids risk and complexity
Info World  11 Oct 2019 10:00

One of the truisms about cloud architecture is that there are typically 100x100 architecture solution patterns. They all work, but only one is the right solution. Microsoft's next Windows 10 feature update gets a name: the Windows 10 November 2019 Update
PC World  11 Oct 2019 05:55

Microsoft has made it official: Windows 10’s “19H2” release will now be officially known as the Windows 10 November 2019 Update.Microsoft is giving itself plenty of runway with what’s also known as the version 1909 release. Typically, the version number incorporates the month and the year, so that “1909” would be assumed to ship in September. That’s the schedule Microsoft committed to, anyway. Microsoft hasn’t changed the November 2019 Update’s version number to accommodate the revised shipping date.Microsoft hasn’t committed to an official rollout date for shipping the Windows 10 November 2019 Update to the millions of “stable” PCs who aren’t in the Insider testing program, either, though sometime in November is a safe bet.To read this article in full, please click here...

Justdial patches security flaw that exposed sensitive data of over 156 million accounts
Digit  10 Oct 2019 17:50

In the world of constant data leaks and breaches, you can now add one more company to the list. A critical security flaw was found on Justdial, which could enable attackers to access sensitive account information of 156.1 million users on the platform. Justdial has now patched the flaw but we suggest you change your account password right away, in case you use the platform. The issue reportedly stemmed from Justdial’s Register API that would enable an attacker to get access into any Justdial account by using a phone number in the username parameter. The flaw was reported by the security researcher Ehraz Ahmed, via MoneyControl. As per the report, the Register API vulnerability could enable hackers to access anyone’s Justdial account. This would be done by replacing the phone number under the username parameter so that the system returns an access token, system ID (SID) and user ID (UID). The SID would then be used to access the account and another accounts linked to it while the UID...

BrandPost: Take Advantage of Enterprise-Grade Container Infrastructure with Hedvig and D2iQ
Info World  10 Oct 2019 13:52

Great news: We're partnering with D2iQ to offer Hedvig users the ability to run stateful container applications. Hedvig users can now use D2iQ's cloud-native ecosystem to deliver an enterprise-grade, Day 2 experience. Enterprise storage has evolved from tape and DAS to NAS/SAN and hyper-converged solutions. But for the past decade, all storage innovation has been developed with virtualization in mind. Stateful containers pose a new set of challenges to the storage layer with the demand for dynamic and frequent volume provisioning, container affinity for volumes, and location-agnostic storage availability. The Hedvig Distributed Storage Platform solves that problem by bringing its enterprise-tested and production-hardened software-defined storage to the container world. It provides container-native and container-aware storage, along with enterprise storage features, such as deduplication, compression, encryption, replication, and more. To read this article in full, please click here...

Reliance Jio will charge 6 paise per minute to call rival telco users: All you need to know
Digit  10 Oct 2019 13:49

Reliance Jio will now levy a charge of six paise per minute everytime a call is placed to someone on a rival network operator. While this goes against the “Jio Promise” of providing free voice calls to users across India, the company will off-set it with free data. The new announcement comes after TRAI is reconsidering extending the deadline for terminating Interconnection Usage Charges (IUC), that are levied when a user calls someone on another network (off-net calls). IUC charges were previously reduced from 14 paise to 6 paise per minute and the charges are slated to be zero from January 1, 2020. Jio's explainationJio sent out a press release explaining why it needs to suddenly charge its customers for voice calls. As per the release, Jio was paying IUC charges from its own pockets to other telcos like Airtel and Vodafone-Idea to offer free voice calling to its consumers. In the last three years, the telco has apparently paid around Rs 13,500 crores as NET IUC charges to other ...

Review: Dell's XPS 15 7590 reaches for 8 cores of CPU power
PC World  10 Oct 2019 10:00

Dell’s XPS 15 (version 7590) is a test of just how much hardware you can jam into a 4.2-pound laptop. This latest iteration includes up to an 8-core “overclockable” Core i9-9980HK and a discrete GeForce GTX 1650 card. That is a lot of hot hardware in a body arguably not built to handle it. Hardware you'd expect to see in a gaming laptop, not a high-end, thin-and-light workhorse. We know why Dell likely did it: to compete with another high-end 15-inch laptop that's stuffed to the gills, the MacBook Pro 15. That's not a gaming machine either—both are systems designed for programmers, engineers, content creators, and other computing-intensive professionals. But the sad truth is most consumers will compare the top CPUs in both laptops, and buy the one with the “faster” CPU. So yes, if Apple is going to cross the line with a Core i9, Dell is apparently ready to cross it too, thermal limitations be damned. Our review will see if the XPS 15's stretch was worth the sacrifice. T...

What are microservices? Your next software architecture
Info World  10 Oct 2019 10:00

Nearly every computer system performs multiple tasks using shared resources, and one of the questions of computer programming is how closely the bits of code that perform those tasks should be tied to one another. An increasingly popular answer is the concept of a microservice—a small, discrete chunk of functionality that interacts with other microservices to create a larger system.Although the basic idea of having such discrete components isn’t new, the way microservices are implemented makes them a natural foundation for both modern cloud-based applications. Microservices also dovetail with the devops philosophy, which encourages rapidly and continuously rolled out new functionality. To read this article in full, please click here...

BrandPost: Increase Productivity and Accelerate Data Science Projects with DC/OS Data Science Engine
Info World  02 Oct 2019 20:38

To Serve Man, with Software
Coding Horror  31 Dec 2017 02:01

I didn't choose to be a programmer. Somehow, it seemed, the computers chose me. For a long time, that was fine, that was enough; that was all I needed. But along the way I never felt that being a programmer was this unambiguously great-for-everyone career field with zero downsides. There...

The Existential Terror of Battle Royale
Coding Horror  05 Nov 2017 10:02

It's been a while since I wrote a blog post, I guess in general, but also a blog post about video games. Video games are probably the single thing most attributable to my career as a programmer, and everything else I've done professionally after that. I still feel video games...

Hacker, Hack Thyself
Coding Horror  02 Jun 2017 08:11

We've read so many sad stories about communities that were fatally compromised or destroyed due to security exploits. We took that lesson to heart when we founded the Discourse project; we endeavor to build open source software that is secure and safe for communities by default, even if there are...

Your Digital Pinball Machine
Coding Horror  02 Nov 2016 20:01

I've had something of an obsession with digital pinball for years now. That recently culminated in me buying a Virtuapin Mini.OK, yes, it's an extravagance. There's no question. But in my defense, it is a minor extravagance relative to a real pinball machine. The mini is much smaller than...

Interface Oriented Design Book Excerpt: Inheritance and Interfaces (Chapter 5) By Ken Pugh
Developer dot Star  12 Sep 2006 14:51

Finding commonality among classes makes for effective object-oriented programming. Often, programmers express that commonality using an inheritance hierarchy, since that is one of the first concepts taught in object-oriented programming. We're going to go to the other extreme in this chapter to explore the difference between using inheritance and using interfaces. An excerpt from Interface Oriented Design.Click here for the full article....

Developer dot Star  21 Aug 2006 16:10

The key to maintaining a good employment outlook in IT, it seems, is to move out of programming and up into more business-oriented IT positions such as systems analyst, business analyst, project manager, or systems architect. Test Smarter, Not Harder By Scott Sehlhorst
Developer dot Star  29 May 2006 13:16

When we’re testing any software, we are faced with the tradeoff of cost and benefit of testing. With complex software, the costs of testing can grow faster than the benefits of testing. If we apply techniques like the ones in this article, we can dramatically reduce the cost of testing our software. This is what we mean when we say test smarter, not harder.Click here for the full article....

Software Maintenance is a Solution, Not a Problem (An Excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0) By Robert L. Glass
Developer dot Star  26 Mar 2006 08:58

The traditional, problem-oriented view of maintenance says that our chief goal in maintenance should be to reduce costs. I think that's the wrong emphasis. If maintenance is a solution instead of a problem, we can quickly see that what we really want to do is more of it, not less of it. And the emphasis, when we do it, should be on maximizing effectiveness, and not on minimizing cost. An excerpt from Software Conflict 2.0.Click here for the full article....

In today's world of blogging and "agile publishing," Weinberg's evolutionary, non-linear method is especially welcome. Stunted Growth: Subsidies and Stagnation in the Software Tools Market By Steve Benz
Developer dot Star  06 Feb 2006 15:26

On the face of it, there should be a great deal of money in the software tools business, but, surprisingly, the money really isn’t there for small businesses. This article will show that the ultimate cause of the deficiency is the fact that most of the large development tools are subsidized by the sales of Operating Systems and hardware. These subsidies have the effect of diminishing the profit potential of any pure software development tool vendor and thus remove the incentive to create.Click here for the full article....
